When you travel for a year, you have to think carefully about what you’re bringing with you. When your trip includes a month on the beach, the Ecuator, the Amazon rainforest, the Andes, and the South Pole, you have to make sure all your bases are covered. Some of them are preventative; some curative. Here’s the list of all of the medical supplies we brought with us (from the states):
- Doxycycline – best long-term malaria prophylaxis (we brought enough for a year)
- Dex – altitude sickness prevention medicine (prescription)
- First-aid kit:
- Bandaids (multiple sizes)
- Neosporin
- Rubber gloves
- Tweezers
- Ace Bandage
- Second Skin (burn/sunburn healing)
- Moleskin
- Medical tape
- Standard toiletries (most travel size as we buy full-size ones after we leave the US):
- Shampoo
- Toothpaste
- Razor and razor blades
- Skin cream
- Suntan lotion
- Aloe
- Insect repellent
- Deodorant
- Ibuprofen
- Migraine medicine
- Water purification tablets
- Immodium AD
- Benadryl
- Icy hot cream
- Muscle relaxants (actually, we picked these up in Ecuador and Peru – much cheaper, and you don’t need a prescription!)
- Sanitizer sprays
